Sunshine Stadium in Fredericksburg is nearly complete and slated to open on March 24. The complex will include a turf-lined baseball stadium, a grass field, an ability field for disabled competitors and an education center with restrooms and concessions.
Fredericksburg and the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation partnered in 2007 on the project. Cal Ripken Jr. himself visited the Bragg Hill-area site in August 2010 to break ground on the field.
Ripken and his brother Bill started the foundation in 2001 after their father’s death as a way to pay tribute to him.
In 2008, Fredericksburg resident and local philanthropist Doris Buffett made a $1 million challenge grant that boosted fundraising. Her philanthropy is done in the name of the Sunshine Foundation.
