A local organization that does humanitarian work aimed at helping to rebuild Afghanistan and forge relationships with its citizens is receiving a matching grant for up to $126,000 from a national charity.
The Marigold Fund recently received its third matching grant in the past three years from Doris Buffett and the Sunshine Lady Foundation.
Buffett, in a statement, said she appreciates the work being done by Marigold Fund founder and field director Gary Moorehead, of Amherst, whose mission includes social service, health care and education.
“He is connecting with Afghan citizens in the city and the villages. He is respecting their culture and their needs, and not forcing them into an American way of doing things,” said Buffett, the sister of investor Warren Buffett. “Marigold Fund is doing work that Afghans need done.”
Buffett said she hopes people will be able to donate because Marigold is transparent in operations and using money wisely.
