ELKINS — Elkins Middle School’s gymnasium was packed in honor of Doris Buffett Friday morning. Buffett heads up the Sunshine Lady Foundation, and donated $234,000 to the school for new furniture and lockers.
“I’m really thankful. Before we had to share our lockers and now we have our own lockers. We have new desks and chairs – the old ones were breaking down. And it’s a lot nicer and cleaner and a lot better,” said Corey Crumm, an eighth grader at Elkins Middle School.
Through cheers and music, students and teachers showed their appreciation for Buffett’s generosity.
“She donated this money to a group of people and kids that she had no connection to. And I felt she deserved some really big recognition,” said Tammy Lipscomb, a retired Elkins Middle School teacher.
“It’s been an incredible joy to do this – I don’t know of anything that makes me happier than touring the school and finding the results of what the money has been used for,” said Buffett.
The Elkins Middle School Hornets crowned Buffett “Queen Bee” and also gave her some presents.
“We gave her a bunch of stuff from West Virginia that were homemade cultural stuff,” said Alexis Dewitt, an Elkins Middle School seventh grader.
But perhaps the biggest present they gave Buffett was donations to six local charities in her name. Paying it forward is a personal philosophy of Buffett’s, and students wanted to keep the tradition going.
“I like that because it’s a philosophy of life – it’s really important to have it,” said Buffett.
Buffett said she’ll always remember her visit to the school, and students said they’ll never forget it. Buffett is having dinner with all of the Elkins Middle School teachers Friday night at Graceland, which is on the campus of Davis & Elkins College.
She’ll be attending the school’s grand re-opening and dedication ceremony on Saturday.
Tours of the school will be open to the public from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday
